SPHERE has developed provider tools and resources to support harm reduction integration into your work with clients/patients and/or program participants.  These providers tools are available to download for free.  Click here to request these tools and resources.

Here is a list of the tools that are available to help you integrate harm reduction strategies into your work.

  • SPHERE Facts and Myths about Harm Reduction Brochure:  This nationally brochure provides the facts to dispel 13 myths about incorporating harm reduction principles and skills in drug and alcohol treatment. This brochure isdesigned to offer information on harm reduction and opens into a poster.
  • SPHERE Harm Reduction in Action:  This brochure describes a set of skills that incorporate harm reduction principles and goals. The skills are described along with strategies that drug and alcohol treatment providers and other health and human service providers can implement as they integrate harm reduction in their work.
  • SPHERE Harm Reduction Menu--Welcome to the Harm Reduction Cafe:  An informative parody of a restaurant menu that depicts a range of options to reduce the harms associated with injection drug use. Useful tool for discussion.
  • SPHERE Outspoken Newsletter on Harm Reduction:  This issue describes ways to minimize and eliminate the conflict between the practice of harm reduction and traditional drug and alcohol treatment programs.
  • SPHERE Stages of Change Wheel: An interactive tool  to be used by counselors and clients/patients/program participants to determine what stage an individual may be in regarding a behavior change. Using this tool allows counselors to share the vocabulary of behavior change, helps individuals recognize the support they need, and facilitates the change conversation.
  • SPHERE Resource Referral Checklist: An easy to use checklist for providers or organizations to use to build their referral network, identify local community resources for referral purposes, and make more effective referrals for their clients/patients and/or program participants.
  • SPHERE Self Assessment Ruler: Interactive user-friendly readiness rulers that support opportunities for self-assessment in conversations about behavior change. Designed to be used by counselors and clients/patients/program participants to help individuals assess their understanding of their risk, their interest in reducing the risk, and identify their behavior change priorities.  Two rulers are available, one asks individuals to “assess the level of risk” they may face from behaviors, the other asks individuals to describe “how much of a problem” particular behaviors present in their lives.
