About Us

Penelope’s Place is a residential program for individuals and families fleeing from life-threatening situations as a result of domestic violence.  Operating in the Brockton, MA area since 1976, Penelope’s Place changed its name from Womansplace Crisis Center in 2009 to commemorate the new partnership between its parent organization, Health Imperatives, in Brockton, MA and the Daughters of Penelope Bay State District #8.  This collaboration made it possible for the shelter to move to a beautiful, newly renovated 1890’s home last year, complete with an updated kitchen, bathrooms, a handicapped accessible bath and a beautiful yard for the young residents to play in.  Penelope’s Place offers housing for up to five families at a time, and generally the length of stay is 90 days.

Trained professionals help residents of Penelope’s Place to balance their healing from trauma with their need to acquire critical life skills to prepare for transitions into more independent living.  Women’s classes and workshops support their social, emotional, and economic independence, and a child therapist provides vital services to young people who have experienced the trauma associated with a violent home situation.
