The Department of Education and Training (DET) provides training, consultation and education to schools and youth-serving organizations throughout the region.  Through its various health-related programs, the Department of Education and Training reaches thousands of individuals in schools and organizations annually, providing creative programs to meet the challenging needs of Massachusetts' youth, school-based personnel and service providers.  The DET has earned a reputation for its quality training and education programs, as well as its Regional Training Center, which publishes a bi-annual calendar of training opportunities, workshops and learning events, many of which offer CEU's to participants.  Specialized programs include the Living With HIV Program and The Parent Education Project.  Staff in the DET are available for classroom education, teacher/staff trainings, and technical assistance in program, curriculum and policy development.

EDUCATION

Education presentations are typically offered in the classroom and aimed primarily for student audiences.  Topics addressed include:

  • Pregnancy Prevention & Birth Control
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Peer Leadership
  • Conflict Resolution & Peer Mediation
  • Child Sexual Assault Prevention
  • Sexuality Education

TRAINING

Trainings are custom-designed to meet the needs of diverse audiences.  Trainings offer school staff and youth-serving individuals an opportunity to enhance their professional development.  Parent presentations teach new approaches to parent-child communication.  Topics on which we present include:

  • Teaching Human Sexuality & HIV/AIDS
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Making Schools Safe for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Youth
  • Responding to Homophobia
  • Teaching New Approaches to Conflict Resolution
  • The Parent Education Project
  • Preventing Child Sexual Assault
  • Sexuality Education

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

The Department of Education and Training staff are available with specific requests for program and policy development.  The areas in which we provide technical assistance include:

  • Developing Health Education and Comprehensive Education Curricula
  • Designing and Implementing Sexual Harassment Policies
  • Creating Safe School Environments
  • Developing Condom Availability Programs
  • Confronting Opposition to Sexuality Education Programs

THE DAVID H. MULLIGAN CENTER FOR HEALTH PROMOTION

Workshops, trainings, institutes, and seminars are offered throughout the year at the Mulligan Center.  In recent years, topics have included:

  • Sex in the Media: What's the Message?
  • Reaching Out to Gay and Lesbian Youth
  • Sexual Harassment
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Child Sexual Assault Prevention
  • Legal Issues in the School Setting
