Types of Abuse

IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT IF YOU ARE BEING ABUSED.
YOU DESERVE TO BE TREATED WITH RESPECT !

Typically, domestic abuse falls into one of five categories: Physical, Verbal, Emotional, Sexual, and Financial.


PHYSICAL abuse includes:
- Pushing or shoving
- Biting
- Hair pulling
- Slapping or hitting
- Kicking
- Choking or strangling
- Physical intimidation such as blocking doorways, "getting in your face", or making threatening motions

 

EMOTIONAL abuse includes:
- Extreme jealousy
- Making you feel guilty
- Public or private humiliation
- Telling you the abuse is your fault
- Destroying or breaking things you care about
- Isolating you and/or controlling who you see and where you go
- Telling you that you are worthless
- Threats against the victim or self (threatening to take the children, commit suicide, report you to immigration, etc.)


SEXUAL abuse includes:
- Forcing or coercing any unwanted sexual activity
- Excessive roughness during sex
- Biting in the genital area or breasts
- Withholding birth control and/or denying reproductive freedom or choice
- Bragging about past sexual partners
- Forcing you to look at pornographic material


FINANCIAL abuse includes:
- Making it difficult for you to work
- Demanding that you turn your pay over
- Withholding money or giving you an "allowance" and/or refusing to pay bills
- Harassing you at your work place
- Refusing to buy food or necessities for the family
- Refusing to keep a job, work and share financial responsibilities
