![]() Peer Mediation:
Peer mediation is a negotiation-based strategy that teaches student mediators alternative strategies to help resolve conflict among their peers. In peer mediation, students trained as conflict managers, apply problem-solving strategies to assist their peers in settling minor disputes before they escalate further. More importantly, peer mediation teaches students an alternative set of skills that they can apply in conflict situations. Our training teaches students the terminology and skills that are necessary to become peer mediators. We offer training at grade levels 5-8 and high school and we involve faculty advisors in the sessions. Technical assistance is also offered to provide guidance in developing and sustaining a peer mediation program.
Goal: The goal of this training is to provide participants with the basic skills and terminology necessary to become peer mediators.
Objectives: By the end of this training, participants will be able to: • Describe mediation • Explain the five steps of a mediation • Use active listening and paraphrasing for better communication • Work with others to resolve a conflict
