Cultural Competence Training The focus of the cultural competence training program is to train human service providers on their responsibility to have a defined set of values and principles, and demonstrate behaviors, attitudes, policies and structures that enable them to work effectively cross-culturally. We strive to motivate service providers to develop and maintain the capacity to value diversity, continuously conduct self-assessments, manage the dynamics of difference, acquire and institutionalize cultural knowledge and adapt to diversity and the cultural contexts of the communities they serve into their work. Our mission is to help human service providers inculcate the above, in all aspects of policy making, administration, practice, service delivery. Goal: The goal of the program is to help participants develop cultural competency and understand its relevance to effective human service work.. Objectives: Participants will be able to • Define and understand cultural competency and its applications to the workplace. • Understand cultural perspectives in health and healing. • Understand how different cultural perspectives shape and influence health beliefs systems. • Understand the concepts of diversity, oppression, stereotype, and discrimination • Apply values, knowledge and skills necessary to deliver cross-culturally competent services and care AHEC offers year round training in the Mulligan Center or brings trainings and materials on site.
