AHEC Alliance for Workforce Development

Mission:  The Cape & Islands AHEC Alliance seeks to build diversity at all levels in health and health-related careers, support education and training of healthcare workers, increase economic prosperity of residents and develop a more competitive applicant pool.  AHEC partners, comprised of representatives of schools, training programs, institutions of higher learning, and healthcare providers will develop a coordinated system of entry into and support for training and education and movement into healthcare employment with livable wages and career pathways.

Vision: By building upon existing services, the AHEC Alliance will remove barriers to economic self-sufficiency and create a more comprehensive, regional approach to healthcare workforce development.  Through diversity, our healthcare system will begin to mirror its consumers and develop a culturally competent, highly qualified workforce.

Current initiatives include:

• Career Pathways:  an effort to coordinate between and among stakeholders to provide potential workers with a smooth, easy transition in the healthcare field, from awareness of opportunities to training and education, to employment to advancement.
• Future Care: a housing support program for students entering or advancing in health careers.
• Tooth tutoring: a five-component, community-based was initiated in 2002 and currently includes pre-school and elementary school-aged children in the towns of Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Provincetown.
